Ah Hong

The Flu which Helped End WWI

The flu virus that jumped from birds to humans... is it linked to the recent bird flu? Are we facing another epidemic?

Coco Lee

Smoker's Rights?

Recently, it was announced that the smoking ban will be extended to certain sections of hawker centres and pubs. This is an atrocious argument (by a youngster in the street) against the ban that I heard on TV just now:

"It all comes down to personal choice.
smoking is a choice people make.
you cannot tell someone what to do or what not to do..
it infringes their rights."

Let's start off with the concept of "rights".

Smokers can keep to places that would not affect non-smokers that much. By granting smokers the right to smoke anywhere, we have also infringed upon the rights of non-smokers who have the right to clean air. A person has the right to do something provided the rights of the people around him/her are not compromised by that person's action. Imagine a world where everyone insists upon having his rights without consideration for others.

An example to illustrate the above point: A person chooses to end his life by bringing explosives onboard a plane. Some may argue that his has the right to his own life, but by jeopardizing the lives of the rest of the passengers in the plane, he has infringed upon their rights to live. It is entirely not acceptable. (By the way, suicide is illegal in Singapore.) Out of point? Smoking, being proven to lead to increased incidences of death due to cancer, can be considered as a slow form of suicide.

Consideration is the key. Probably such regulations would not be necessary if most smokers have the consideration to smoke somewhere so as not to subject others to their second hand smoke.

********

I believe most of us have come across friends and even family members who smoke. I have nothing against considerate smokers, who try their best not to implicate others with their choice to smoke. In fact, many of them are aware of the harmful effects of smoking, and some have tried to quit, but the withdrawal symptoms had proven too difficult for them to overcome. However, whenever I see parents smoke in their own homes, in front of their children, it really makes me wonder, why would they want to subject their children to this health hazard if they really care for their children? How responsible can such parents claim to be? This view may be a little extremistic. On the other hand, I believe (or would like to believe) that these parents really care for the well-being of their children. Perhaps they don't understand the dire effects of second hand smoke, despite the many campaigns that try to draw attention to them? Or is it just that while regulations have been effective, their target audience have failed to understand the reasons behind the regulations?

It's 陈伟联 for Superstar

It's old news but, for the benefit of those who are not watching the show, Kelvin 陈伟联 has become the winner of the Channel U Project Superstar Competition on 1 September 2005.

A summary of the competition (warning: the description is going to be quite boring, coming from someone who doesn't know much about music and singing)

Round 1:
Kelly's voice at the start was relatively soft as compared to Weilian's, and appeared to be drown by the loud music. Kudos for Kelly for trying out the Bohemian wig though. As for Weilian, his stage presence wasn't diminished by his inabilty to execute fanciful dancesteps onstage due to his visual handicap.

My choice: Weilian

Round 2: Acappella
Weilian managed to sing the front portion correctly without music at all. Comparatively, Kelly only sang a short portion without music, and I wonder if she could carry it through if that part were to be extended to as long as Weilian's solo part. (后记:they both sang solo almost equally long, but don't know why WL's part sounded longer during the first listening.) Nevertheless, Weilian's harmonising angels performed much better than Kelly's, giving him an edge. Singing with minimal music suits Weilian's style. (后记: It was a close fight. )

My choice: Weilian

Round 3: Duet with JJ
Weilian started off 一千年以后 really well. He brought out the mood of the song. When they reached the chorus, I even felt that he had overshadowed JJ. As for Kelly, 木乃伊 was o-k, but paled in comparison - in terms of projecting the mood of the song. However, in the trio song Kelly had a meaty part of the song, in which she performed well with JJ. (后记: I forgot to say that JJ had the meatiest part :p) Weilian was led onstage much later into the song, and only had some harmonising part to sing, which was quite out of place as Kelly's and JJ's voices were too high-pitched.

As a result, the judges harped on how much better Kelly performed than Weilian in the trio song and paid no attention to the earlier individual duet, and ruled in Kelly's favour.

My choice: Given the unfair circumstances, I think this round should not even be counted. My speculation from looking at the individual duet is that had it been a fair duel in the trio song (either get a female singer to sing with Weilian or let Weilian and Kelly sing, and forget that JJ since he's not even competing), Weilian might have gained an upper hand over Kelly.

Round 4: Specially tailored songs to expose contestants' flaws
On My Way
I suspect that beginning from this round, Weilian might be affected by the negativity in Round 3 or that he had used up too much energy at the beginning, as some people who had watched the rehearsals said that his performance was not on par with his performance in the rehearsals earlier. Lee Weisong made a rather out-of-point comment that the song he wrote for Kelly was to help her show off her strengths and techniques. Some argued that Weilian's song was more diffcult to sing. However, I think Kelly performed very well for an also difficult-to-sing song.

My choice: Kelly

Round 5: Contestant's own choice of song
Kelly cleverly made good use of this segment to show off her versatility, completing her performance of fast songs and acappella with a slow and sentimental song. Weilian, on the other hand, chose a touching song that suited his vocals, drawing criticism that his range of song choice was not diverse enough.

My choice: Kelly

In the end, the audience chose Weilian over Kelly.
Probably most people who bothered to vote believed that Weilian's true capabilities were not displayed completely in the finals.)

OK, maybe just let me end off (and dampen the spirits) with a statement of guilt...
How privileged we are to have the time and energy to muse over such reality TV programmes! I'll like to feel that I've learnt something from it (whatever it is), and we should treasure this time and energy we have to do meaningful things so that we would not have any cause for regret.
